liver Cirrhosis

What is Liver Cirrhosis – Causes, signs & treatment

Cirrhosis is fundamentally defined as the degenerative disease in which the normal cells are replaced by the scarred tissues. This mostly occurs as a result of long-term damage to the liver that may happen either due to excessive alcohol abuse or chronic hepatitis. The scarred tissues obstruct the flow of blood to the liver, hence slowing down the liver function to process nutrients, hormones, drugs, and natural toxins. The terminal stages of liver cirrhosis may eventually lead to chronic liver disease.

According to a report, nearly 4.5% to 9.5% of the general population that includes adults are affected by liver cirrhosis.

Possible causes of Liver Cirrhosis

There are several possible causes that have the potential to turn into liver cirrhosis, most common being alcohol and viral hepatitis.

Alcohol liver cirrhosis – The repeated and excessive use of alcohol for a long time can cause alcoholic liver disease. This may be noticed a decrease in the alcohol tolerance in drinkers. They also tend to suffer from severe hangovers than normal as the liver damage increases.

Viral Hepatitis– Most commonly Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are involved in causing the cirrhosis as they may lead to chronic infections. Scarring mostly occurs in chronic infections lasting six months or more.

Genetic disorders– Some genetic disorders also create certain circumstances that lead to liver cirrhosis. For example, Wilson’s disease is a genetic deficiency which inhibits the body’s ability to metabolize copper. Consequently, the excessive amount of copper accumulates in the liver and other organs and destroy the tissues.

Also in hemochromatosis, the body absorbs excess amounts of iron, that causes damage to the liver. This is more common in men (in the age of 40-60) than in women.

Additionally, some infants are born with the deficiency of galactosemia, which is an enzyme needed to digest the milk sugar, galactose. Consequently, the milk sugar accumulates in the liver that may lead to the liver cirrhosis. This may be fatal if not treated on time.

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis – This is a progressive liver disease in which a buildup of bile is created in the liver that results in damage to the bile ducts that drain the bile from the liver. Eventually, excessive pressure is created that destroys the bile ducts, hence causing liver damage which ultimately leads to liver cell death.

Some of the other causes that may lead to liver cirrhosis are as follows:

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (obesity)
  • Auto-immune hepatitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Genetic digestive disorder
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (hardening and scarring of bile ducts)
  • Infection such as syphilis.

Things that tell that you have Nasal Septum Deviation

The nasal septum is a bone and cartilage that form the divides the left and the right nostril.

Normally, the nasal septum lies in the center of the nasal cavity. However, it may get deviated to one side of the nose in some cases, which is known as Deviated Nasal Septum.

The nasal septum deviation, in its severe form, can block one side of the nose due to reduced airflow. This causes difficulty in breathing. Moreover, it may lead to drying of the nasal mucous and more chances of infection due to overexposure of air of the other side.

What causes the Nasal Septum Deviation?

Congenital – In most of the cases, the nasal septum deviation is genetic. It develops in utero, while the fetus is still within the womb. The cases were related to challenges that were faced during the birth or in babies with larger birth weight.

Trauma or Injury – Any injury during the birth may cause a deviation in cases of infants. Otherwise, it may be caused by an accident, fall or while playing sports.

There are some factors that might aggravate the symptoms of a deviated nasal septum such as swelling in the nasal tissues due to an infection or inflammation such as rhinitis or rhino sinusitis. Moreover, the natural process also leads to changes in the bone structures of the nose, which might create worsening of the problem.

Symptoms that indicate the nasal septum deviation

  • Nasal obstruction – The first and most noticeable sign is the blockage of the nasal passage. This causes difficulty in breathing. The blockage is often on one side of the nose. This becomes more prominent when one has a cold, allergy or respiratory infection.
  • Nose bleeding- Increased exposure of the mucous membrane to air causes dryness and more chances of bleeding.
  • Noisy breathing during sleep – Again due to obstruction of the nasal passages, noises can be heard during sleeping due to difficulty breathing.
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Nasal congestion
  • Facial pain
  • Sleep apnea
  • Headache
  • Post-nasal drip

Complications such as dry mouth due to excessive mouth breathing increased pressure in the nasal passages and disturbed sleep may also occur if not treated on time.

How is it treated?

The condition is left untreated unless it is causing trouble to the patient. The first priority of the surgeon is to treat it non-surgically with some medications that help in reducing the swelling of the nasal tissues and treat conditions like cold, allergy or infection if any.

If the symptoms continue to persist, surgery is a choice. The nasal septum deviation surgery is known as Septoplasty. It involves correction of nasal septum by making a small incision.

Procedure

  • Before the procedure, the doctor will ask you to stop taking blood thinning medications such as aspirin or Advil if you are on it. This is done to reduce the excessive bleeding that might take place during the surgery,
  • You will also be told not to eat or drink anything a night before surgery. This will prevent any vomiting or choking while you are on anesthesia.
  • The surgery is done under general anesthesia in most of the cases. However, the surgeon may also prefer to do it with local anesthesia.
  • The procedure may take 30 to 90 minutes to complete. An incision is made on one side of the nose and nasal mucous is lifted up. Then, the nasal septum is moved to its original position.
  • This is followed by suturing and dressing of the nose.

The success rate of the surgery is very high. Most of the surgeries done by the Best ENT Surgeons in India are successful, do not reverse back and heal fast.

Recovery after the surgery

  • In order to recover faster, the patient must reduce the physical activity such as exercise, running, weight lifting etc for some weeks after the surgery. These activities may increase the nasal pressure leading to a heavy nose bleed.
  • Elevate the head while sleeping to prevent swelling
  • Do not blow the nose for 3-4 days after the surgery.
  • Wear clothes that have zippers or buttons in the front, so that they don’t have to be pulled up over the head.

Cost of septoplasty in India

Some of the Best ENT Hospitals in India have the best infrastructure and modern devices to perform this time of surgery at reasonable costs. The average cost of the nasal septum deviation surgery in India lies around USD 2000.

Tips for Setting Up Your First Home Together After Marriage

Getting married is such a huge deal, but many consider moving into your first home an even bigger affair. Now that you have a place where your love can truly blossom, it’s time to decorate it so that it fits both of your needs and lifestyles. If you need some assistance in that department, here’s a little guide that will help you set up your first home.

Find a good bed

This is really the most important step. Your bed is where you’ll spend one-third of your life together, so make sure you choose a comfortable type. If you know your partner is an active sleeper, you might also want to opt for a roomier king size bed, so that both of you catch enough Zs. Even if the rest of your place is still an undecorated mess, once you jump into a comfy bed, nothing else will matter!

The bathroom should be next on your list

A house will never feel like home until you can wake up and do your morning bathroom routine with your eyes half closed. Set up your hygiene products and towels so that you can easily reach for them at any time. Don’t stress about arranging everything perfectly. You’ll have plenty of time to find the best setup, but having them near, for now, is all you need.

Cool air, warm love

Now that you’ve just started your life together, it’s a smart idea to work on your comfort and the health in your shared space. An AC is a must, especially if you live in hot areas like Australia. If you decide to go without an air conditioner, you can expect many sleepless nights and cranky mornings. So, find an agency for quick air conditioning installation in Sydney and put that obstacle behind you right away. The installation is a breeze and you’ll feel so much more comfortable in your space when it’s nice and cool even when the sun is scorching outside.

Personalize the space

Many people just can’t stand bare white walls and empty shelves when they move into a new home. However, resist the temptation to hit a décor store and fill your space with generic prints, wall hangings and one-dollar trinkets. They might make the place beautiful and stylish, but they will not make your home truly yours. So, instead, start decorating with things that feel very personal to both of you. Think photographs, travel memorabilia and things that you bought together. This way, when you look around your home, you’ll see your life and not something that got torn out from the pages of a design magazine. And, when you eventually get guests, you’ll have plenty of conversation starters that you paid no money for!

Add some accent pieces

No matter if you opted for a minimalist approach or a more traditional style, every space needs a star. This can be a designer piece of furniture, an attractive area rug or even a wallpapered accent wall! Make sure to allow that one piece to stand out and your guests will truly be swept off their feet as soon as they walk in.

Don’t rush it

Don’t start arguing over small and unimportant things as soon as you start your life together. Moving and getting used to a new place is stressful in itself, so you don’t need to add tension by quarrelling over decoration. So, as soon as you notice you’ve pushed yourselves too much, stop and take a small break from decoration and decision-making. After you aim your attention towards your partner, you’ll realize that your disagreements about furniture and paintings magically disappeared!

All in all, take your time, be understanding and you’ll not only have a beautiful place but you’ll also enjoy a harmonious life filled with love and support. Congrats, newlyweds!

New Year, New Home, New You: Creating a Healthy Home

We all strive to be as healthy as possible and do everything in our power to keep our family happy and healthy as well. However, danger can come even from your own home with you being completely oblivious of how and why. Precisely this is the main reason to tackle a home cleanup project with the arrival of New Year. Really, there’s no need to wait for the spring cleaning in order to make your personal environment perfectly healthy for you and your family members quickly after we welcome 2019. After all, a fresh home also means a fresh start for everyone involved, and especially you who made it all possible.

Dusting is a must

It may seem like the only issue with dust is its unsightliness, but accumulated dust in one’s home can cause severe allergies, especially in children. In that respect, not only will thorough dusting, followed by a wet mop right afterwards, allow you to finally feel free in your own home, but it will also protect you and your family members from being exposed to potential allergens. This doesn’t only go for regular home dust but for dirt, debris and dust particles that are often brought into a home with footwear, too. That said, you may want to encourage everyone in your household to follow a New Year’s resolution stating – no shoes once indoors!

Go completely toxins-free

Start your New Year by saying goodbye to all the toxic materials that may accumulate inside your home. If you want to create a healthy environment for your kids, it’s very important to get rid of all the conventional plastics. Moreover, opt for DIY green cleaning solutions that won’t only keep your home safe but will allow you to do your bit for the environment, too. There is plenty of non-PVC plastic on the market, while you can even go a step further and choose to go organic when it comes to both your food and fabrics.

Focus on the outdoors as well

A lot of people tend to ignore the outdoor aspect of their home when doing a thorough cleanup, or, in this case, a proper home attitude change. This may not be that big of a concern for people who live in apartments, but for people who live in houses, with a yard to take care of, the outdoors is very important. After all, you won’t usually see an Australian home and garden filled with unsightly debris and leaves. So, if you’re from the Land Down Under you should contact a company that deals with junk removal in Sydney that will help you do the dirty work and get rid of all the junk from your yard (and your home). Don’t let this growing pile of hazards to just sit there in your place when you can easily get it out of the way and make the whole area safe for kids’ play and adult relaxation time.

Keep the air clean

Make it a point to start the New Year with clean air in your home and lungs. Airing your space frequently is a must! People tend to have this misconception that opening their windows and doors will only let the toxins in. But the fact of the matter is that without proper airing, the danger of home allergies and poor air quality will only get bigger. Moreover, invest in a quality air purifier if you can. This can be your first smart purchase in the New Year as the air purifier will definitely make a huge difference for the air quality inside your home and the overall health (and sleep) of everyone inside. In case you’re a smoker, try to quit as a part of your New Year’s resolutions. And if you can’t, at least make it a habit to smoke outside.

Remember, in order to truly create a perfectly healthy home and start your New Year journey happy, fulfilled and completely sure of yourself, you will need some help and support. So, don’t hesitate to share your plans with the rest of your family. If you can make the necessary changes together, you will only manage to create a positive personal environment while making your bonds even stronger than before.

7 Tips for Writing a Meaningful Love Letter in a Long-Distance Relationship

Long-distance relationships can be challenging, to say the least. We’re lucky in the twenty-first century to have many ways of communicating instantly over huge distances. We can stay in touch with loved ones via instant messaging, social media, email, and phone calls. But there’s just something romantic about receiving an actual letter. Here are seven tips for writing a meaningful love letter in a long-distance relationship.

Before you write…

As with just about any project, a love letter will always turn out better if you prepare a bit before you begin. Put some thought into this thing. You don’t want your recipient to look at it and think you copied the words off the internet, it should sound as if it was written just for them. This is why it’s so important that you calibrate your letter for the person you’re writing it to. It’s also nice to time your love letter as a surprise.

Maybe it will be a surprise regardless of when they receive it. But there’s something about receiving a letter on a day other than your birthday, Christmas, or Valentine’s Day. Try not to worry too much about what specific medium or format you use. There is no perfect way to write or deliver a love letter. If you want to try and compose yours in poem form, go for it, but you don’t have to. You can handwrite your letter, type it out and print it, or even send it digitally. There is not perfect medium and they all have their pros and cons.

Different ways of writing a love letter

There’s no perfect way to write a love letter, in fact, there are many good ways. The way you choose will depend on you, your situation, and the person you’re writing to. When you’re in a long-distance relationship, a month by month plan might work.

Write a short letter every month and keep your loved one feeling less lonely and thinking about you. You could also send them love notes on postcards, giving them a peek at the kinds of things you’re seeing in your new location. You could try writing a few notes before you leave and have your loved one open them after you’re gone.

Explain why you’re writing

A good way to start off your letter is to say why you’re writing it. What inspired you? This section can be as brief or as long as you like. “Maybe you’ve been tossing these words around in your head for weeks and finally decided to put them down on paper. Or maybe you were just overcome with the idea recently. The purpose is to give your recipient an idea of what they’re about to get into,” suggests Marylin Collier, romance writer at Eliteassignmenthelp and Ukwritings.

What do you love about them?

What are the things you love about them? Do some brainstorming and list off all the things you can think of. Is it the things you have learned from them? Maybe it’s just the way they smile or how their hair looks first thing in the morning.

Think about some ways physically, sexually, emotionally, and mentally that they have improved your life. These could include things you have told them before, or things they might not even know you appreciate about them. Try and think up a few dozen first and then pick your favorite ones to write about.

Recall some memories

It’s time to brainstorm again, this time think of as many of your favorite memories with this person as you can. These can be anything from the moment you first met, to an anniversary celebration, to a funny memory that’s become an inside joke between the two of you. Once you’ve brainstormed a bunch, pick out your favorites and write about why they mean so much to you.

The more specific, the better

When it comes to describing how you feel, the more the details you include, the better. It can be an amazing experience for them to hear something for the first time, something you’ve been the first to mention, or phrased so uniquely. Every time they become aware of the trait, or whatever it is you mentioned, they will think back to you and your letter.

What does your loved one do that makes your heart skip a beat? Think hard about this one, because it might not come to you right away. But when it does, you’ll know, and it will probably be the highlight of your love letter.

Be sure to properly format and edit your letter

Take some time and edit and format your love letter before you send it out. Paying attention to these little details is important because it shows that you care. Here are some tools that can help you out:

Seven Signs You’re Experiencing Dementia Symptoms And Mental Deterioration

Dementia is a condition that can be described as a group of symptoms rather than a specific disease. It presents itself mainly in the form of memory impairment, communication troubles, and faltered thinking. Stemming from multiple causes, the most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease accounting for 60 to 80% of all the reported cases. Globally, approximately 47.5 million people are living with this condition with its occurrence increasing by the minute.

Stages Of Dementia

The progression of dementia can be categorized into different stages depending on its severity. This helps in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients. Generally divided into 3 phases: mild, moderate and severe, multiple new in-depth assessment tests now classify the illness into more types.

Various scales are employed for evaluating dementia in order to better understand the illness by assessing functionality and cognitive decline. The most commonly employed scale for the task is the GDS scale, also referred to as the Reisberg Scale, and this divides dementia progression into 7 stages:

  • Stage 1: No Cognitive Decline- No Dementia
  • Stage 2: Very Mild Cognitive Decline- No Dementia
  • Stage 3: Mild Cognitive Decline- No Dementia
  • Stage 4: Moderate Cognitive Decline- Early Stage Dementia
  • Stage 5: Moderately Severe Cognitive Decline- Mid-Stage Dementia
  • Stage 6: Severe Cognitive Decline (Middle Dementia)- Mid-Stage Dementia
  • Stage 7: Very Severe Cognitive Decline (Late Dementia)- Late-Stage Dementia

Diagnosis is mostly detected when a patient has reached Stage 4 or beyond because Stages 1-3 do not typically exhibit any symptoms. Stage 4 is referred to as early dementia. Stage 5 and 6 are termed as middle dementia, and Stage 7 is considered late dementia.

Early Warning Signs of Dementia

Dementia has many different types; each resulting from a specific underlying cause and thus presents its own unique set of symptoms. However, there a few early signs of the illness that can help you confirm its presence.

Following are 7 early identifying signs of dementia and mental deterioration:

Altered Short-term Memory

Short-term memory changes are early identifying symptoms of dementia. Although subtle, these changes are the ones to be wary of. In many cases, older adults happen to remember a memory from years ago but fail to recall details as recent as what they had for breakfast the same morning. Forgetting items in certain places and struggling to remember them or forgetting appointments and other tasks are common presenting signs of altered short-term memory. Another finding in such patients is repetition, primarily because they fail to recall whether they have completed a particular task or not.

Finding the Right Words

Due to altered thinking and fluctuating memory, it is particularly difficult for dementia patients to converse with others. This is a challenging task for both the patient and the attendant. Problems in communicating their thoughts are a common finding in people suffering from dementia. Patients often find it hard to explain what they are thinking and struggle to find the right words to get their message across.

Altered Mood

Mood changes are widespread in dementia patients owing to the multiple prevalent changes in their mind. Dementia patients often struggle to recognize this change in themselves, but it is important for friends and family to notice any difference in mood. Depression is a common early presenting sign of dementia. Altered thinking directly affects one’s judgment; therefore, it is not rare to come across patients exhibiting a shift in personality. They also develop disinterest towards their surroundings including family, friends, activities and hobbies.

Struggling To Finish Normal Tasks

The inability or incompetence to finish routine tasks is a good indication that someone has early dementia. The progression with this goes from struggling to finish complicated tasks that require active thinking, such as doing paperwork, to familiar and straightforward tasks, such as washing dishes, taking out the trash, etc. The hesitance to learn new things or follow a new routine are all signs that the person is experiencing some kind of mental deterioration.

Confusion

This confusion arises owing to multiple reasons such as memory loss, lack of judgment, impaired thinking and struggling with language. Patients in the early stages of dementia often seem lost in their own imaginary world, but in reality, they are just trying to place the pieces of the puzzle together. Their scattered thoughts disable them from performing simple routine acts such as communicating openly with others, organizing their thoughts, or expressing their emotions.

Impaired Sense of Direction

The disintegration of spatial orientation and a sense of direction starts rather early in dementia. It disables a person from remembering familiar routes, landmarks, and regularly employed paths. People with dementia find it difficult to follow directions as they are unable to follow back-to-back instructions. Their minds are unable to register new information quickly; therefore, it is not uncommon to find a dementia patient getting lost in familiar territory.

Inability To Adapt

Adapting to change is difficult not only for dementia patients but for everyone. However, for dementia patients, adapting to change is somewhat of a nightmare as they struggle to recognize familiar faces and places; therefore, for them, new experiences are slightly daunting. Many patients express the need for a routine, so they know what to expect instead of having to deal with new circumstances every day. Standing in the face of change, patients often are lost and find it challenging to cope with new surroundings as their minds are unable to register the change. Unfamiliarity owing to memory loss changes leads to fear and fear further leads to confusion, alterations in mood, and thus to an overall difficulty to survive.

Dementia is a complicated condition that is hard to pick on, especially during its early stages. Mental deterioration progressively gets worse with age.  If ignored, its symptoms get worse and ultimately leave the patient in a state that is hard to come back from. Brain science is an extensive field that is constantly welcoming advancements and breakthroughs. For the latest updates in the world of brain science, DementiaTalk is the platform that will give you access to reliable information and guidance related to dementia.

If you are experiencing any of these signs and symptoms, it is best to consult a doctor and move forward with screening tests, detailed diagnostic studies and treatment. There is often a hesitation on the patient’s part to see a doctor. Find a creative way to convince them to seek professional help and promote health consciousness at a community level.

How to Plan the Perfect Proposal

So you’re ready to take the next step, but have no idea where to start? Proposing is a daunting task that can be very scary. What ring do I pick out? Where do I take my partner? What do I say? Those are just some of the questions that are racing through your brain now that you’ve decided to get down on one knee. Even though it seems like there is a lot to do, it will be much simpler than you think! Just let your passion and love for your special someone guide you to make the right choices.

Engagement Ring

The engagement ring is the first place to start. There are no rules for proposing. You should spend what is in your budget and whatever will make your partner happy. But what ring do you choose? The first step is metals. Take a look at the jewelry your fiance-to-be loves to wear. Is it gold or silver? This is very crucial because most people will have a preference for one or the other. They will want to wear their engagement ring every day so it’s important to pick out a metal that goes with their normal jewelry. If there is more gold tones, then get a gold band. The same thing goes for silver!

pear shaped diamond engagement ring

The stones are the next big part of an engagement ring. There are quite a variety to choose from and this really depends on your significant other’s personal style. Diamonds are the classic choice which can come in many colors and sizes. No matter the color or size, the 4 things you need to know about diamonds are cut, color, clarity, and carat. The cut  affects the sparkle of the diamond so it’s the most important! Color only refers to white diamonds because they can range from a dull yellow to a brilliant white. A diamond’s clarity refers to the amount of tiny imperfections on its surface. This is not noticeable to the naked eye. Carat is the weight of a diamond. If a smaller diamond is cut well, then the carat will not matter as much!

Another option is unique stones like sapphires or opal. If your fiance-to-be has a unique style, then this may be a great idea! To get a feel for if they would be interested in a gemstone engagement ring or not, ask their opinion on Princess Kate’s ring or a friend’s. Your partner’s reactions to those will help you decide what to get. Many jewelers, including Blue Nile, offer an assortment of engagement rings from diamonds to gemstones, allowing you to find the ring of your fiance’s dreams.
