Throughout history, the buying and selling of sex has been a staple in many different civilisations. Additionally, it is not unlike the growing fields of technology, music and athletics. Like these other cultural interests, sex work has evolved through the ages. Both the West and the Eastern world share a similar struggle for knowledge and understanding. In the West, sex work was initially limited to an elite and educated, a time period called the Renaissance, when sexual pleasure was associated with the birth of poetry, art and literature. Sex work was viewed as being tolerated and almost acknowledged by the courts, but largely unknown by common people. In the East, sex was seen as something that had to be hidden and protected.
Sex work should be seen as a valid profession, and sex workers should be treated as any other career. People who pay for sex should be treated with respect and with respect for their work. Conversely, individuals who practice sex work, in any of its forms, should be treated with respect as well. Nobody talks down to ambulance chasing attorneys, yet they predatory. They still serve a purpose in their society, as do those that work in the sex industry.
Through the various different types of sex work (burlesque dancers, sex chat, custom picture and video production, professional porn stars, escorts, strippers), many people support their families on their income. It is not degrading, nor is it a substandard profession. Why does society look down upon the various sex workers, yet applaud the individuals that solicit those in the sex work fields?
Working as a prostitute or escort worker can be psychologically draining, particularly if you find it hard to leave your job. People who choose this profession have to take responsibility for the consequences and should be permitted to make their own choices. The only time you should have a licence to hire or work as a prostitute is when you are using sex work as a source of income. Ensure the conditions for sex workers are legal and suitable to work in and reflect the integrity of those who do it. Only through acceptance and regulation can these assorted professions within the sex workers community receive the respect that they deserve.
If you are in need of companionship, or sexual release, you should be encouraged to consult with a local sex worked in your community. They are people like anyone else, and offer a unique service that could benefit nearly any consenting adult. Helping those that are lonely, or those that are in need of sexual release, in the past they were seen as a type of healer, and necessary for a society to function properly.
The next time you see a sex worker, don’t look down on them. They are providing a much needed service to your community. One day you may be in need of their services, and should that day arrive, please remember to treat them with the dignity and respect that their profession deserves.
